Removing Wrinkles and Creases From Curtains

When curtains and drapes start getting creased, it can feel as though they’ll never get back to how they were. If you’ve tried a few different things but nothing has worked, don’t worry, the team here at John Frederick has got some tips for you! We’re confident that this list should help you get your curtains back in their best shape.

Steaming

Steaming is one of the most effective and gentle ways to remove wrinkles from curtains and drapes. Handheld steamers are particularly convenient as they allow you to smooth out the fabric while the curtains are still hanging. Just fill the steamer with water, heat it up and run it over the fabric in slow, vertical strokes. The steam gets right into the fibres, relaxing them and removing wrinkles without causing damage.

Ironing

Ironing is another fairly reliable method for removing wrinkles, but it does require more effort compared to steaming. To iron your curtains, take them down and lay them flat on an ironing board. Set the iron to the right heat level for the fabric type, then place a clean, damp cloth over the curtains to protect them from direct heat and iron in even strokes, focusing on the wrinkled areas.

Make sure to check the care label for any specific ironing instructions to avoid damaging the fabric!

Clothes Dryer

For a quick fix, you can use a clothes dryer to remove wrinkles from your curtains. This method works best with lighter fabrics though.

Place the curtains in the dryer along with a damp towel and set the dryer to a low heat setting. The moisture from the towel combined with the heat helps to relax the fibres and remove wrinkles. After about 15-20 minutes, hang the curtains immediately to prevent any new wrinkles from emerging.

Hanging In A Hot Bathroom

If you don’t have access to a steamer or iron, a simple yet effective method is to hang your curtains in the bathroom while running a hot shower. The steam from the hot water will fill the room, and as it does, it will get into the fabric and help to smooth out the wrinkles.

It’s important to make sure the curtains are hung properly and not touching any surfaces that could transfer dirt or mildew.

Professional Curtain Cleaning

Sometimes, DIY methods may not be enough, especially for delicate, expensive or heavily wrinkled curtains. This is where professional curtain cleaning services come in.

Professional cleaners have the expertise and equipment to handle all kinds of fabrics and conditions, and the team here at John Frederick is no exception!

There are a few ways that we can help:

  • Firstly, professional cleaners understand the nuances of different fabrics and know the best methods to clean and de-wrinkle them without causing damage.
  • We also use commercial-grade steamers, irons and other equipment that can effectively remove wrinkles and restore the curtains’ original look.
  • Hiring a professional saves you time and effort, especially if you have large or numerous curtains.

When selecting a professional curtain cleaning service, consider the company’s reputation by looking for reviews and testimonials to try and gauge the quality of service. Choose a company with plenty of experience in curtain cleaning, ensure they offer de-wrinkling services along with cleaning, and compare prices, but also consider the value of the service they’re providing.

John Frederick is London’s favourite curtain cleaning company. If you need help getting your curtains in pristine condition, give our team a call today.
